Gutter Health Checklist

Run through this quick checklist before each season to catch small problems before they become expensive repairs. Takes about 10 minutes from the ground.

Exterior Visual Inspection

0/6

Walk the perimeter of your home and look up at the gutters from the ground.

Gutters appear level — no visible sagging or pulling away from fascia
No visible cracks, holes, or rust spots along gutter runs
End caps and mitre joints are sealed — no open gaps
Downspouts are firmly attached to the wall and gutter outlet
Downspout extensions direct water at least 4 ft from the foundation
No staining or streaking on siding below the gutters (sign of overflow)

Debris & Blockage Check

Debris buildup is the #1 cause of gutter failure. Check these after every major storm and each fall.

No visible leaves, twigs, or debris piled in gutters from the ground
Downspout outlets are clear — no debris visible at the top opening
No plants or moss growing in or on the gutters
Splash blocks or underground drains at downspout bases are clear

Water Flow Test

Run a garden hose from the highest point of each gutter run toward the downspout.

Water flows freely toward the downspout with no pooling
No water spills over the front edge during the test
Water exits the downspout at full volume — no blockage
No leaks visible at seams, end caps, or downspout connections
Gutter slope looks correct — roughly 1/4 inch drop per 10 ft toward downspout

Fascia & Soffit Condition

The boards behind and below your gutters are the first to suffer when gutters fail.

Fascia boards show no soft spots, rot, or paint peeling behind the gutter
Soffit panels are intact — no cracks, holes, or discolouration
Gutter hangers are secure — no loose or missing spikes/screws
No wasp or bird nests visible in soffit vents or gutter ends

Seasonal Readiness

GTA winters are hard on gutters. Run this section in late October and again in early April.

Gutters cleaned after all leaves have fallen (late October / early November)
No ice dam formation along the roofline after the first freeze
Spring inspection done after snowmelt — check for winter damage
Gutter guards (if installed) are clear and seated properly
